User interface and design has an ever changing meta, usually when someone is designing a UI component you have to juggle visual complexity(or clutter) without necessarily dumbing down the purpose of the component.
That skill takes a lot of time and talent but there are a lot of tricks you can do to ‘cheat’ at design and make it look fresh. One such trick is to use fewer borders, and while they’re great to distinguish two elements from one another, they can make your interface seem very busy.
Box-shadows, varying background colors, and improving element spacing can help clean this up.
